The virtual classroom consists of a main interface that shows the student's live pictures around the screen. They can enter the room through an invitation email by clicking on a link and using an optional password. No special software downloads are required. Within the main screen students can hear and talk to their instructor and each other as they would in any class room. The instructor controls the microphones in order to avoid interruptions during a presentation, but can selectively activate them at any time. All class participants can use an optional chat box to pose questions. Other features include the ability to electronically raise one's hand, share a common white-board and engage in instant polling.
Participants can change the location and sizes of pictures using only the mouse. In Screen Share mode, the students can see exactly what is being shown on the presenter's own monitor as if they were looking over the instructor's shoulder. Using a standard paint program and digital tablet, the instructor has a fully functional white-board that is more versatile than any found in a traditional classroom. Images can be colored in, saved, and erased in seconds.
The tools available for instruction include anything that can be shown on any computer including Powerpoint presentations, pre-recorded video clips, stored still images and live internet surfing. The possibilities are endless and limited only by imagination. Participants do not have to travel to any location, saving both time and money. Presentation materials that are saved to the computer's hard drive, can be conveniently mailed to the class, and the entire session can be inexpensively recorded on VHS tape or DVD for later sharing and distribution.
